The Jordanian Interfaith Coexistence Research Center was established with the aim of using research, dialogue, and practical initiatives to promote values of peaceful interfaith coexistence. Jordan's moderate political climate and role as a leading advocate for regional peace make it a natural locale for the center, which has the potential to play an important role in spreading a heritage of Muslim-Christian mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. These goals are particularly important in light of the changes the world has experienced in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. The attacks and the subsequent US-led war on terrorism have provoked numerous dialogues on the civilization tensions between Islam and Christianity and have fostered a global chasm of fear and intolerance between followers of the two faiths. JICRC will act as a mechanism to mediate the divide that is being perpetuated by mutual fears and misunderstandings. JICRC constitutes initiatives for building and broadening interfaith coexistence and mutual respect between religions, giving the highest priority to addressing the urgent problems of misunderstanding and violence through the provision of comprehensive, objective, and accurate studies of the problems involved.

JICRC aims to develop and implement educational programs geared towards developing the concepts of peace building using the interfaith perspective of human dignity, equality, justice and freedom. These programs will tackle issues of: Coexistence, Democracy, Women's Rights and empowerment in the MENA region, Children's Rights and Youth rights, and religious freedom. JICRC firmly believes that there is a strong correlation between a community's commitment to promoting tolerance, the degree to which equality between citizens is legally guaranteed, and the community's stability and ability to achieve peace. When we use the term tolerance, we are specifically referring to the legal rights of different religious, racial, and ethnic groups to practice their particular beliefs and ways of life, without being confronted by other groups aiming to limit or change their practices and freedom of choice within the norms of law. Interfaith practices allow the opportunity to combine the efforts of those who believe in promoting human dignity, tolerance, peace and justice in order to defeat malicious and unjust behavior and attitudes.
